Wingate School on the sunny island of Tenerife is a great place to work.

We have been recognised as an outstanding school in all aspects and one of the reasons for this is the fact that our staff love working here.

Here is what the BSO inspectors from Penta said on our last inspection:

“The teaching body is very stable, with high retention rates. Staff report being very happy, supported and challenged, with no desire to move away from the school. The school .. works hard to ensure the appointment of high-quality staff.…..New teachers receive a staff handbook prior to arrival in Tenerife. An induction programme includes relevant information about matters directly related to teaching in the school, as well as support for completing formalities related to moving to and working in Spain. Careful monitoring and support for staff through the performance management cycle and excellent CPD provision, is focused on school targets as well as teachers’ personal development goals. Lesson observations feed into the needs-based CPD programme for teachers and TAs. This includes opportunities and support for leadership training and a specific training programme for TAs. All staff have a clear job description.“
PENTA, BSO INSPECTION REPORT. SECTION 8. 2022

Wingate offers Staff a great work life balance with considerably less paperwork expected than for similar positions in the UK. Class sizes are also small with no more than 24 in a class, and an average student to teacher ratio of only 13:1 (If you count TA’s this goes down to 11:1). The children are well behaved, and easy and pleasant to teach.

We also provide all staff with top quality health insurance with dental.

There are many exciting things to do on the islands, wonderful beaches and fantastic restaurants. The capital is less than an hour’s drive away for those who want to experience culture and local events.

We offer free Spanish lessons to all new staff for the first 6 months to help them integrate into life in Spain, however you will find an extensive English community here on the island if you wish.

We have a staff wellbeing coordinator, our lovely Jenny, who will help you settle in Tenerife and give you advice and guidance throughout your process of moving and settling on Tenerife, from advice on the best places to live, help finding accommodation, organising pickup from the airport upon arrival, introducing you to your colleagues and anything else you might want help with.

Salaries at Wingate School are fair and transparent and considerably more than the “teachers union for private schools” mandated salaries in Spain. The cost of living in Tenerife for people who rent is 55,9% less than in London so your money will go more than twice as far.
The basic starting salary at Wingate School for someone fresh out of University and taking a postion with no extra responsibility, ie 26,000€ a year, gives you about the equivalent standard of life as a £50k salary in London for example. Source: Numbeo
